Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grants of up to £9,000

Eligible property owners in England and Wales can receive £7,500 towards an air-to-water or ground source heat pump. A temporary £9,000 grant is available for qualifying off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG, for applications properly made from 21 July 2026 to 31 March 2027. Eligible residential air-to-air heat pumps can receive £2,500.

As an MCS-certified installer, Green Energy Homes can assess your project, apply for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme on your behalf and deduct the approved grant from your quote.

Making low-carbon heating more affordable

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government scheme that reduces the upfront cost of installing eligible low-carbon heating in homes and non-domestic properties across England and Wales. It supports air-to-water, air-to-air and ground source heat pumps, as well as biomass boilers in limited circumstances.

BUS is installer-led, which means you do not apply to Ofgem yourself. Your MCS-certified installer assesses the proposed project, submits the application and claims the grant after the eligible installation has been completed. The approved grant must be shown as an upfront deduction on your quote and invoice.

Green Energy Homes will explain which grant may apply, prepare a clear quotation and manage the application process. Final eligibility is determined by Ofgem under the scheme rules.

Current Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants

The amount available depends on the technology, the property and, for the temporary uplift, the heating system being replaced.

Eligible installationBUS grantImportant qualification
Air-to-water heat pump£7,500£9,000 where an eligible off-gas-grid property replaces oil or LPG during the temporary uplift.
Ground source heat pump£7,500£9,000 under the same off-gas-grid oil or LPG conditions. Eligible water-source systems fall within the ground source category.
Air-to-air heat pump£2,500Residential properties only. The temporary £9,000 uplift does not apply.
Biomass boiler£5,000Available only in limited rural, off-gas-grid circumstances and subject to additional scheme requirements.

Grant values and eligibility are subject to current scheme rules and Ofgem approval.

Important: the £9,000 grant is not a general increase
It applies only where an eligible property is off the gas grid and replaces oil or LPG heating with an air-to-water or ground source heat pump. Off-grid properties replacing coal, direct electric heating or a fossil-fuel hybrid do not receive the uplift, although the standard £7,500 grant may still be available. Self-build properties cannot receive the £9,000 uplift.

Could you qualify for the temporary £9,000 grant?

Your project may qualify for the higher grant if all of the following apply:

  1. The property is in England or Wales.
  2. The property is not connected to the gas grid.
  3. Its existing heating system is fuelled by oil or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
  4. The new system will be an eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump.
  5. The application is properly made between 21 July 2026 and 31 March 2027.
  6. The property is not a self-build and meets all other BUS requirements.

What does ‘properly made’ mean?
Ofgem must have the information required to assess the application, together with the property owner’s consent and identity verification. Requesting a quote or beginning the process before the deadline is not enough on its own, so allow time for the application to be completed.

Spread the remaining cost with flexible finance

After the BUS grant has been deducted, eligible customers may choose to spread the remaining balance through our finance partner. Finance is optional and separate from the grant application, allowing you to compare the available terms with paying from savings or another source.

Finance available subject to status. Green Energy Homes Ltd is an Introducer Appointed Representative of Ideal Sales Solutions Ltd, trading as Ideal4Finance. Ideal Sales Solutions Ltd is a credit broker and not a lender (FRN 703401).

Boiler Upgrade Scheme FAQs

It is available temporarily to eligible off-gas-grid properties in England and Wales that replace oil or LPG heating with an air-to-water or ground source heat pump. Applications must be properly made between 21 July 2026 and 31 March 2027, and self-builds are excluded from the uplift.

An eligible air-to-water or ground source heat pump can receive the standard £7,500 grant. A property connected to the gas grid does not qualify for the temporary £9,000 uplift, even if it currently uses oil or LPG.
An eligible fossil-fuel or electric heating system can be replaced under BUS. However, replacing direct electric heating does not qualify for the £9,000 oil and LPG uplift; the standard grant may apply.
Yes. Eligible air-to-air heat pumps installed in residential properties can receive £2,500. They must meet the scheme’s technical requirements and are not eligible for the £9,000 uplift.
No. BUS is installer-led. Green Energy Homes submits the application on your behalf, while Ofgem contacts you directly to confirm your consent and verify your identity.
No. An existing fossil-fuel heating system must be fully replaced. A hybrid system that keeps a fossil-fuel boiler alongside the BUS-funded heat pump is not eligible.
No. That is not currently a BUS eligibility condition. Good insulation may still improve comfort and heat-pump performance, so it will be considered as part of the system design.
Most new-build properties are not eligible. Some self-builds can qualify for the standard grant if they meet the scheme’s detailed definition, but self-builds cannot receive the temporary £9,000 uplift.
The temporary uplift applies to qualifying applications properly made from 21 July 2026 until 31 March 2027. Contacting an installer before the deadline is not sufficient if Ofgem has not received the required information, consent and identity verification.

Find out which BUS grant may apply to your property

Tell us where the property is located, whether it is connected to the gas grid and which heating system it currently uses. Our team can discuss heat-pump suitability, explain the likely BUS route and arrange a survey and quotation.

There is no obligation to proceed, and final grant eligibility remains subject to Ofgem approval and the scheme rules in force when the application is made.
