Air Source Heat Pumps
Professional air source heat pump installation delivering efficient, low-carbon heating and reliable year-round performance solutions.
Air source heat pumps in Essex need to be designed for the building they will heat. That might mean a compact post-war house, an extended commuter property, a rural home using oil or LPG, a coastal building or a newer development—each with different heat loss, emitters, hot-water routines and siting choices.
Green Energy Homes assesses those factors before specifying equipment. The main air source heat pump page explains how the system works; this regional guide focuses on the evidence and installation decisions relevant across our Essex coverage.

A room-by-room calculation records fabric, glazing, ventilation assumptions and required temperatures. It stops the design being based on an old boiler rating or a broad square-metre estimate. It can also show whether targeted insulation or draught improvements would materially change the requirement, without turning every enquiry into an open-ended renovation project.
Radiator output at the proposed flow temperature, pipe sizes, circulation, system volume and underfloor-heating zones all affect performance. Some existing emitters may be adequate while others need attention. Treating them as one distribution system allows changes to be concentrated where they are useful instead of promising that everything can stay or replacing it indiscriminately.
Cylinder capacity and recovery need to reflect the people and routines in the property. Space for the cylinder and indoor components, as well as pipe routes through finished rooms, should be agreed early. This is especially important when replacing a combi boiler or coordinating the work with an extension, utility-room change or bathroom project.
The unit requires free airflow, drainage, a stable base and maintenance access. Sound at neighbouring windows and boundaries, coastal exposure where relevant, appearance and future planting also influence the position. MCS planning requirements and any listed, conservation or development-right restrictions must be checked against the address rather than assumed from the region.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme support can help eligible projects, including enhanced time-limited support for certain qualifying off-gas-grid properties. Eligibility and current amounts should be verified through the installer-led process. The quotation must still explain design temperatures, expected operation, electrical work, controls, commissioning and what is included after the grant is applied. See our current grant guide.

Properties across Essex can differ in fabric, existing fuel, plot size, neighbour distance and exposure. Rural homes may have oil or LPG but that must be confirmed; coastal settings can influence equipment positioning and maintenance; compact town plots can make sound and access more prominent.
These are design prompts, not county-wide assumptions. The town pages below offer closer local context, while the room-by-room calculation and site survey determine the final system.
Some qualifying off-gas-grid properties replacing oil or LPG may receive enhanced Boiler Upgrade Scheme support while the temporary uplift is available. The exact eligibility, heating history, property and technical conditions must be checked before relying on the higher amount.
It can, if the calculated heat loss, emitters, pipework, hot-water design, electrical supply and outdoor position form a workable system. The property’s age is not a calculation. The survey should identify specific improvements or equipment changes rather than make a blanket judgement.
Well-designed underfloor heating can deliver useful heat at relatively low water temperatures, but floor construction, available heated area and room heat loss determine the outcome. It is one emitter option, not a prerequisite, and should be coordinated with the heat-pump design.
There is no useful universal distance divorced from the model and site. The position must satisfy airflow and service clearances and pass the relevant sound assessment, taking windows, boundaries, reflecting surfaces and operating conditions into account.
An air-to-water system can provide space heating and stored domestic hot water. The cylinder and recovery are sized around expected use. The proposal should explain any immersion, hygiene cycle and backup arrangement rather than imply that it behaves like an instantaneous combi boiler.
The system should be filled and tested, controls configured, flow and design settings checked, and operation explained to the customer. Handover should include the agreed documentation and guidance on schedules, weather compensation where used, hot water and suitable ongoing care.

Tell us about the current heating, property, hot-water use and any possible outdoor positions. We can confirm the information required, review the grant route and arrange an appropriate assessment.
