Why Choose an Exhaust Air Heat Pump?
Exhaust air heat pumps offer a smart, energy-efficient way to heat homes by reusing warm air that would otherwise be lost through ventilation. Key benefits of exhaust air heat pumps:
- Recycles heat from extracted indoor air
- Lower energy consumption than traditional electric heating
- Provides space heating, hot water and ventilation in one system
- Ideal for airtight, well-insulated homes
- Improves indoor air quality year-round
- Compact system with minimal outdoor space required
What Is an Exhaust Air Heat Pump?
An exhaust air heat pump is a low-carbon heating system that captures heat from stale air extracted from inside your home – such as air from kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms – and reuses it to heat your home and hot water.
Instead of releasing this warm air outside, the system recovers the heat energy and transfers it into your heating and hot water system. This makes exhaust air heat pumps especially efficient in airtight, energy-efficient properties.
They are commonly installed in new-build homes and low-energy properties where mechanical ventilation is already required.
How Does an Exhaust Air Heat Pump Work?
Exhaust air heat pumps work by recovering heat from ventilation air rather than drawing it from outside. The process includes:
- Warm air is extracted from inside the home
- Heat is captured from the exhaust air
- The heat is compressed to raise its temperature
- Heat is transferred to space heating and hot water
- Fresh, filtered air is supplied back into the home
Because the system continuously recycles indoor heat, it delivers high efficiency with low electricity usage, particularly in well-sealed homes.

Air to Air Heat Pumps
Is an Exhaust Air Heat Pump Right for My Home?
Exhaust air heat pumps are best suited to:
- New-build properties
- Highly insulated, airtight homes
- Properties with mechanical ventilation systems
- Apartments and compact dwellings
- Homes designed to low-energy or Passivhaus standards
They may not be suitable for older, poorly insulated homes without significant upgrades. Our specialists assess your property honestly and recommend the most effective heating solution for your needs.
How Much Does an Exhaust Air Heat Pump Cost?
The cost of installing an exhaust air heat pump typically ranges from £6,000 to £10,000, depending on:
- Property size and layout
- Insulation and airtightness levels
- Hot water demand
- Ventilation system requirements
Boiler Upgrade Scheme Support
Eligible exhaust air-to-water heat pumps can receive £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, provided the property, proposed system and installation meet BUS and MCS requirements.
Qualifying off-gas-grid retrofit properties replacing oil or LPG heating may receive £9,000 until 31 March 2027. Exhaust air-to-air systems are not currently eligible.
We confirm the proposed system and property eligibility before making the installer-led application on your behalf.
Exhaust Air Heat Pump vs Air Source Heat Pump
| Feature | Exhaust Air Heat Pump | Air Source Heat Pump |
|---|---|---|
| Heat Source | Indoor exhaust air | Outside air |
| Best For | New-build homes | Retrofit & existing homes |
| Outdoor Unit | Not required | Required |
| Efficiency | Very high in airtight homes | High across property types |
| Ventilation Included | Yes | No |
Exhaust air heat pumps are an excellent solution for modern, energy-efficient homes, while air source heat pumps offer broader suitability for existing properties.
