Why Choose a Ground Source Heat Pump for Your Home?
Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are one of the most efficient and future-proof heating systems available in the UK. They use stable underground temperatures to deliver reliable heating and hot water with minimal energy input.
Key benefits of ground source heat pumps:
- Extremely low running costs compared to gas, oil or LPG
- Outstanding efficiency year-round (not affected by air temperature)
- Very low carbon emissions
- Quiet operation with no external fan unit
- Ideal for underfloor heating and low-temperature radiators
- Eligible for UK government heat pump grants
- Long lifespan (often 20–25+ years)
What Is a Ground Source Heat Pump?
A ground source heat pump is a renewable heating system that extracts heat stored in the ground and uses it to heat your home and hot water.
Unlike air source systems, ground source heat pumps rely on stable underground temperatures, which remain consistent throughout the year. This allows them to achieve higher efficiency levels and more predictable performance.
Heat is collected through buried pipework (ground loops) and upgraded to a usable temperature using electricity – delivering significantly more heat energy than the electricity consumed.
How Does a Ground Source Heat Pump Work?
Ground source heat pumps work by transferring renewable heat from the ground into your home:
- Heat is absorbed from the ground via buried pipe loops or boreholes
- A circulating fluid carries the heat to the heat pump unit
- The heat is compressed to increase its temperature
- Warmth is distributed through radiators or underfloor heating
- Hot water is stored in a cylinder for household use
Because the ground temperature is stable, GSHPs maintain exceptional efficiency even in winter.

Is a Ground Source Heat Pump Right for My Home?
Ground source heat pumps are particularly suitable for:
- Detached and semi-detached homes
- Properties with gardens or available land
- New-build developments
- Well-insulated homes
- Homes using underfloor heating or oversized radiators
- Rural or off-gas properties
If ground space is limited, vertical boreholes may be an option. Our experts assess your property and advise honestly on feasibility and cost-effectiveness.
How Much Does a Ground Source Heat Pump Cost in the UK?
The cost of installing a ground source heat pump typically ranges from £18,000 to £30,000, depending on:
- Property size and heat demand
- Ground conditions
- Horizontal ground loops vs boreholes
- Existing heating system
- Insulation and emitter upgrades
Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grants
Eligible property owners in England and Wales can receive £7,500 towards an approved ground source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme. This includes eligible water-source heat pumps and systems connected to shared ground loops.
Until 31 March 2027, the grant increases to £9,000 for qualifying off-gas-grid properties that have no mains gas connection and are replacing oil or LPG heating.
As MCS-certified installers, we check your eligibility, manage the installer-led application and ensure the grant is deducted from your installation cost.
